1. Weekly summary and recap

  • U.S. stocks were higher on the week.
  • High beta large caps fell due to profit taking.
  • Low volatility large caps gained momentum.
  • Bond prices were lower and yields rose.
  • The commodities rebound continued.
  • Gold and crude oil gained on the week.
  • The U.S. dollar index was lower.

Recap (August 30, 2021 – September 3, 2021)

Large caps (S&P 500) ended the week up 0.6%. Tech stocks (NASDAQ-100) gained 1.4% to end the week at new all-time highs. Small caps (Russell 2000) were up 0.7%. The Dow 30 fell 0.2%. High beta large caps gave back some gains after the rebound of the previous week while low volatility large caps were higher. The CRB was up 0.4% after surging 5.9% the previous week. Bonds ended the week with losses and yields rose. Year-to-date crude oil is up 43.5% followed by CRB index with 31.2% gain. Gold has year-to-date losses of 3.6% followed by Bonds Total Return at -1.1%. The S&P 500 and NASDAQ-100 finished the week at all-time weekly closing highs.
