1. Weekly summary and recap
- U.S. stocks were higher on the week amid rising volatility.
- High beta large caps rose but less than low volatility large caps.
- Bond prices were lower and yields rose for a third week in a row.
- The rally in commodities continued for a seventh week in a row.
- Gold gained. Crude oil moved higher.
- The U.S. dollar index was unchanged on the week.
Recap (October 4, 2021 – October 8, 2021)
Large caps (S&P 500) ended the week with 0.8% gain. Tech stocks (NASDAQ-100) finished the week up 0.2%. Small caps (Russell 2000) limited losses to -0.4%. The Dow 30 was up 1.2%. High beta large caps recovered from earlier losses to gain 0.5% on the week while volatility large caps rose 1.2%. Bonds fell and yields rose for a third week in a row. The CRB gained 2.2%. The U.S. dollar index ended the week unchanged and gold gained 0.9%. Year-to-date crude oil is up 64.6% followed by CRB index with 40.3% gain. Gold has year-to-date losses of 6.2% followed by Treasury Bond Total Return at -2.6%.
